My daughter signed up for SCU Invitational that happened in Dec 2018 from Dublin High, which apparently goes as Bay Area Forensic. There was no official confirmation or communication from anyone except the student representative in her school giving partial information verbally, text messages etc. First day we went to SCU 4 hours before, since there was no clear information on the exact timing, room number or how the process works for at least the first timers. It was very chaotic with most people I tried to get information were not clear where to go, what to do except those who have been coming for few times. Signed up as a judge but didn’t know how anything works. Got first email communication with a bunch of attachments just an hour before the tournament start time, which I didn’t check till the next day anyway. By the end of the first day, we got some idea. For the second day, we’re told to report by 9AM and by the time we reached they said we missed on round which started before 9AM. Some how finished the fiasco in two days.
Then my daughter signed up for the second tournament, which she assumed after her conversation with the student representative in the school is going to be in Stanford on 2/9/19. Apparently, there was some confusion whether she is on wait list for Stanford or Berkeley. But my daughter assumed and kept preparing for over a month planning for Stanford. The night before, she was told that she is not in Stanford list and there was some confusion. Even in Berkeley she was not on wait-list, after putting all the effort preparing for it.
Students can make mistakes and there need to be proper system in place to handle all such things, which seems to be missing. This whole thing seems to be a organized chaos. With any event one would expect a specific organization who is conducting the event to whom you pay the fee and from whom you receive payment confirmation, program schedule, instructions etc. Nothing of that sort is there and we get asked to right check on some random person’s name with zero communication or followup. I still don’t know who the right contact person, name or number or email is. In this day and age, this kind of organization is totally unexpected, I hope this gets addressed.
I really appreciate the effort and most of the remaining aspects with this. There need to be proper parent, student orientation and proper communication with each event and instructions before hand for the first timers (email both student & parents). Should at least be able register to tournaments online, view status and all info related to that.
